We repair both kinds every day, so we see how each one ages. Neither is simply “better” — it depends on your space, your water and how you wash.
Front load machines
Front loaders use less water and less detergent, wash more gently and spin faster, so clothes come out drier. They are the better choice if water and electricity costs matter to you.
- Good for: larger families, heavy loads, anyone short of water.
- Watch out for: the door seal needs wiping and the filter needs cleaning, or they start to smell.

Top load machines
Fully automatic top loaders are simpler, cheaper to buy and easier to load without bending. They also cope well with hard water and are less fussy about detergent.
- Good for: smaller budgets, older family members, balconies with little space in front.
- Watch out for: they use more water and are rougher on delicate clothes.
What about Bengaluru’s hard water?
Both kinds suffer from scale in hard water. Whichever you buy, a yearly service and descale will add years to it.
Our honest advice
If you have the space and wash a lot, choose a front loader and look after the seal. If you want simple and hard-wearing, choose a top loader. Either way, have it installed properly — half the early faults we see are installation problems.
