A small puddle under a washing machine is easy to ignore until it damages the floor or trips the power. The first job is to work out when the leak happens, because that tells you where it is coming from.
It leaks while filling
Water appearing as soon as the machine starts filling usually means the inlet hose. Check both ends are screwed on tightly and that the rubber washer inside the hose is still there and not cracked.
It leaks during the wash
On a front loader, the door seal is the most common cause. Look for a split, or for a sock or coin trapped in the folds of the rubber. Detergent drawers that are overfilled can also spill down the front.

It leaks while draining
A leak at the end of the cycle points to the drain filter not being screwed in fully, a loose drain hose, or a cracked pump housing.
- Check the drain filter is screwed in all the way.
- Check the drain hose clip at the back of the machine.
- Make sure the drain pipe on the wall is not blocked and overflowing.
Using too much detergent
Too much detergent, or the wrong kind in a front loader, creates foam that forces its way out of the seals. Front loaders need low-foam “front load” or “matic” detergent.
When it needs a technician
A split door seal, a cracked tub or a failed pump needs a replacement part. Call us, switch the machine off at the wall, and we will come and fix it — usually on the first visit.
